Words

They say the pen is mightier than the sword, that words possess an innate power far beyond the most powerful weapon or physical force that earth can muster. Words shape the world, they define life and give meaning to sensorial experiences. They provide form to things around, they 'call into being' our existence, our singularity, our individuality. They give coherence to a chaos, they make the unknown known, they articalute our incomprehension. They retort, contort and distort reality; they redefine it. They turn black to grey and white to a lighter shade of pale. They stir emotion, they make us weep, laugh, feel pain and anger, empathy and concern. They form the very foundation of existence.

Yet what does one say when another's life is thrown into chaos; what words can soothe the suffering and ease the pain when another's world caves in amidst the senseles disorder and unpredictability called life. No words, no linguistic form, no idiom, no utterance can provide solace and comfort.

Chaos defies linguistic expression; it undermines the structured world built on structuralism. It mocks the very optimism of Reason established by words ... Chaos reminds us that life is beyond our control, that it and its sibling unpredictability are the very life forces of existence.

But perhaps silence is the answer. And in the silence of our own hearts we will find the answer and the peace we so desire.

"My dearest friend whom I love as life itself, I'm sorry this is happening. Do not blame yourself for this matter isn't about blame - both are equally at fault; both equally devoid of it. I have always admired your strength of character. Do not doubt in it now. I know not what else to say and I know nothing I say can help you ease the pain. All I can offer is my silent company, and in that silence I promise to see through this tumultous and tormentous experience with you ... every step of the way. And in that silence, I know you will find comfort and peace ..."
