Cyber-generation/Ethos

We live in an age of political correctness,
of pleasantries, of niceties.

We no longer speak the 'truth' for
truth no longer exists.

The 'grand meta-narrative' has been shattered.
Only the shards remain.

There is no absolute objectivity
for all things are relative,
every-thing subjective.

There is no more certainty
for a woven micronarrative is as valid as the next.
Your voice is as strong as mine ...
and everyone else's.

Me, myself, I.

There are no more standards
for every effort - good or bad - is worth applauding,
an encouragement.
(And here I recall being accused
of having too high standards in my work
such that others can't follow)

We no longer value quality
for it is just about one's best
even when one never quite knows
what that best is.

We no longer value community for
it is the individual that matters.
My views are as good as yours.

We believe everyone's a winner
(See, watch me on Youtube TV!),
we think everyone's a leader.

Modernity has given birth to mediocrity.

We live in a nuclear age:
of nuclear power; of nucleated families.

We live in shattered world:
of shattered dreams and shattered hopes,
of shattered realities and shattered illusions.

We live in a broken world:
of broken hearts, of broken minds,
of broken bodies, of broken souls.

Yet we keep on yearning, keep on deluding

But

When we open the door to ourselves wherein
we find only emptiness within.

*Just musings after a observing students of this generation. It is most disheartening, most disillusioning. I can no longer understand nor empathise. And I dread to live the future.
