Moments

It is at the heart of human nature; it courses through the veins of our mortal being - the desire to stop time, the hope that time could just for that moment we cherish and hold so dear stand still. At times it is a desire so strong we would exchange all other moments for just this one.

And if you've experienced that one moment in time when all others pale in comparison you would live a life yearning for that return.

But it never does. Time stays for no mortal beast. All things pass; all living matter decomposes. Existence is defined by its transcience. And the awareness that even our most treasured moments will fade with the passing of time is that which is more painful than the lost moment.

But if we've ever had that one moment - just one - we know we've lived.

Perhaps it is the fight to hold on to something we know has passed that defines us. Perhaps it is the courage to hope that marks our humanity. Perhaps it is in the knowledge that we should even though it would never be again that carves who we are ...
